3 Ways to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions on the Road

Between hectic office days and regular travel dates for work, a rapidly changing schedule can get in the way of your fitness goals. Whether you’ve decided to get in shape for 2018 or just want to maintain a healthy lifestyle, keeping your New Year’s resolutions can be especially hard work when you’re an event planner.

But with proper preparation, a willingness to improvise, and some mindfulness, anyone can keep their fitness resolutions – no matter how busy or far away from home they might be.

The BUZZ Registration team knows all about the challenges of event planning (that’s why we offer registration management services in the first place). Today, we’ll share three strategies to help you tackle the challenge of integrating fitness resolutions into your travel schedule.

Plan and Prepare

As an event planner, you’re in the business of preparing for the unexpected. Why not apply the skills you use in your career to your personal goals, as well? If you prepare ahead of time, you’re much more likely to stick to your goals and keep a consistent routine.

For example, if you’re a dedicated gym-goer, check your hotel gym’s hours of operation ahead of time so you can build workouts into your travel schedule. If jogging al fresco is more your style, use Google Maps to scout routes in the area before you arrive. Got a super-tight schedule? Try the 7-Minute Workout when you’re strapped for time.

Since diet can be a major pitfall while traveling, bring nutritious snacks along or research healthy dining options near your hotel. You’re much less likely to hit the drive-thru on a stressful travel day if you already have a stash of fruit and almonds in your bag.

Go With the Flow

To keep your health resolutions while on the road, you need to be flexible. Don’t let a lack of resources or time interfere with your goals! If there’s no gym in the hotel, for instance, you could perform some simple yet effective bodyweight exercises in your hotel room.

You must also be willing to reschedule your fitness routine to keep work and health in balance. For example, an early meeting may conflict with your normal morning jog and hearty breakfast. In that case, you may want to consider waking up early so that you can still start your day with your usual ritual. Adjusting your schedule will help you strengthen new fitness habits and stay on with existing ones.

Be Kind: Unwind

Even at your busiest, you should check in with yourself from time to time. If you’re not mindful, skipping workouts and eating from the vending machine become easy to justify. Taking some time to center yourself can help you stick to your goals.

Try this simple mental exercise. Find a place where you can sit quietly for a few minutes. Follow the rhythm of your breath. Then, bring your attention from the soles of your feet up to the top of your head, focusing on each part of your body along the way.

Forms of mindfulness meditation like this “body scan” have been proven to decrease stress, enhance mental function, and increase willpower. You don’t need to be sitting down, either – mindfulness can be practiced anywhere. When practiced regularly, this exercise will become second nature.
